Staff Resources

When Marj Sire called on February 7 to say that Jim had passed away the night before, I was not surprised. Not that it was expected, but I was not surprised.  I was told that Jim died due to complications of pneumonia, which one of Jim’s long-time friends told me after the service is “the old man’s friend.” He and Jim often disagreed theologically at Starbucks over coffee.  Jim had been in and out of the hospital in recent weeks. He had 13 stents in his heart. When learning years ago that he needed stent number 13, Jim humorously asked what the record was.

InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA is one of the member movements from 160 countries which make up the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students (IFES.) Over the past few years, InterVarsity’s Graduate & Faculty Ministries has developed a partnership with IFES Caribbean (CARIFES), which includes 12 IFES-affiliated national student movements. As part of this partnership, CARIFES staff have visited and spoken during our annual GFM meeting and GFM members have visited and participated in CARIFES events. Kevin Kummer writes below about his visit in November 2017 to Guyana and Suriname.

These stories from four of your colleagues provide a snapshot of what’s going on around the country. During this season of outreach to new grad students and faculty let’s pray for one another, for our student and faculty leaders and for God’s work in hearts and lives. May God give us wisdom, strength and grace as we respond to the needs of those around us and may His purposes be fulfilled and His name honored.

I was pleased when Bobby asked me to write a short piece for Inside GFM. The writing process helped me to crystalize some of my thoughts as we envision our 2030 calling.  As you’ll see in this article, GFM embodies the spirit of what I’ve written. I’m excited about Bobby and Kathy Tuan-MacLean‘s leadership and your good work as we enter into this new season of ministry.

By now, most of you have settled into the new academic year. NSO events are winding down and you are catching your breath after initiating lots of conversations and drinking more cups of coffee than you care to remember. As you follow up with new graduate students and faculty, a pithy email pointing to excellent resources will serve them and not add too much to your already overly full calendar.

In the fall of 2016, God prompted GFM Staff Chelsea Whitfield to act on a dream he’d given her years previously to see a witnessing community among Indian international students. May God use this story as inspiration, and perhaps even a nudging, to try something new as you launch into New Student outreach (NSO) 2017!
