Fearfully and Wonderfully (Self) Made

The Affiliation of Christian Biologists (ACB) invites you to join us online for Tuesday, May 14 at 7:30-9:00 pm EDT (4:30-6:00 pm PDT)! Our guest speaker, Jeff Hardin, will speak on “Fearfully and Wonderfully (Self)Made: Ancient Christian Faith and the Modern Science of the Embryo.”

The transformation of each of us from a fertilized egg to an organism with trillions of cells arranged in incredibly complicated ways is a wonder of biology. Each person is truly a “self-made” individual, as the future-directed program of development unfolds from humble beginnings. Biologists are beginning to unlock the secrets of the embryo in increasing detail. Embryonic development involves the expression of genes, but also form-shaping movements carried out on a massive scale with elaborate choreography.  The intricacies of this cellular world provide opportunities for profound beauty, wonder, and worship, but also raise larger questions. As Christians, how should we think about our tiny beginnings? And how should we think about humans’ increasing ability to manipulate and mimic the processes of early embryonic development? Join Jeff Hardin, a biologist and Christian, in wrestling with how to situate the modern science of embryos – and ourselves – within the sweep of the biblical story.

Dr. Jeff Hardin is an ASA member and the Raymond E. Keller Professor of Integrative Biology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  His research focuses on the basic cellular mechanisms that transform the shape of the embryo during embryonic development. He is an award-winning biology educator and lead author of the widely used text, World of the Cell (Pearson). Jeff has extensive interests at the intersection of science and religion and is an affiliate in the Religious Studies program at UW. With historian Ron Numbers, he co-founded the Isthmus Society to promote dialogue between the sciences and religion and co-edited The Warfare between Science and Religion: The Idea That Wouldn’t Die.

Because this event is open to the general public as well as all ASA and ACB members to attend the May 14 event with Jeff Hardin, we ask that everyone pre-register to receive the Zoom link. There is no charge!  We encourage universities and churches to organize watch parties for this event. Feel free to also invite your friends and family members to pre-register and attend!

Best wishes and God’s blessings,
