2018 Conference Recap

The InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA Graduate and Faculty Ministries 2018 Northeast Faculty Conference was held at the University of Rhode Island (Kingston), August 2-5, 2018.  This was the fourth annual conference held at this location. The conference theme was “Joy, Faith, and Resilience in the University.”  We hosted thirty three participants (which included a few family members of academic delegates).

A significant feature of every one of our conferences is Scripture engagement, and this year’s scripture text was the Epistle of James.  We explored the Epistle of James for it’s wealth of practical instruction and encouragement , but also, as a point of departure for considering, and pursuing increasing fruitfulness in, the virtues of joy, faith, and resilience in university-based vocations.

The conference also featured numerous plenary presentations by Professors Robert Kaita, LaQuanna Sparkman, Torrence Sparkman, Curt LaFrance, Kayon Murray-Johnson and we enjoyed music from Leon and Shyla Powell, Worship Leaders at Elm City Vineyard Church in New Haven, CT. Attendees enjoyed meals together on the URI campus, less-structured times for recreation and fellowship, and a celebration of Prof. Kaita’s retirement after forty years at Princeton University, through many of which he also was a strong supporter of InterVarsity Faculty Ministry.

The conference was marked by a sense of growing camaraderie and shared purpose among the delegates, and was blessed by the Lord in other distinct and unexpected ways. We are so thankful for all of those who attended and look forward to serving faculty in the Northeast at the 2020 Northeast Faculty Conference.
